Picking the wrong van size is one of the most common reasons a move runs over time. Here is a simple guide to help you work out what you need.
Rough guide by home size
- Single items or a few boxes: a small or medium van is plenty.
- Student room or bedsit: a medium van, usually one trip.
- Studio or 1-bedroom flat: a large van (Transit-size or similar), usually one trip.
- 2-bedroom home: a large van, sometimes two trips depending on furniture.
- 3-bedroom home or bigger: a large van with more than one trip, or more than one van, plus a two-person crew or more.
What makes a load bigger than you think
- Sofas and wardrobes: a 3-seater sofa and a double wardrobe can take up a surprising amount of floor space.
- Loose items: bags, lamps and plants take more space than the same things packed in boxes.
- Garden and garage: bikes, tools, garden furniture and the shed are easy to forget.
- White goods: fridges, freezers and washing machines need to stand upright, which uses height as well as floor space.
Tips to make it fit
- Pack everything you can into sturdy boxes of a similar size, because they stack well.
- Take apart beds and tables before the van arrives, or ask us to do it.
- Get rid of anything you are not keeping before moving day. We also offer clearance if there is a lot to go.
