Cardiff’s inner suburbs — Roath, Cathays, Canton, Pontcanna, Grangetown — are dominated by Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses. They’re beautiful, characterful, and a genuine challenge on moving day. Narrow hallways, steep stairs, single-width roads, and residents parking everywhere make terrace moves in Cardiff a different proposition to a modern semi-detached.
Here’s what we’ve learned after hundreds of terrace moves across Cardiff’s CF postcodes.
1. Sort the Parking First
Most of inner Cardiff is in a residents’ parking zone. If your street requires a permit, you’ll need to apply to Cardiff Council in advance for a dispensation or temporary suspension. This can take 5–7 working days and costs around £30–£60 depending on the zone. Skip this and you risk a parking fine and having the van moved on.
We handle parking logistics on behalf of clients regularly — just mention it when you book and we’ll advise on the specific zone you’re in.
2. Measure the Hallway and Stairs Before Moving Day
Victorian terrace hallways in Cardiff are often under 80cm wide. A standard double mattress (135cm wide) will not go straight up those stairs — it needs to be tilted at an angle, and sometimes it genuinely won’t fit without disassembly or removal through a window. Know this before the van arrives.
- Measure hallway width at the narrowest point (usually beside the stair newel post)
- Measure the staircase turn at the landing
- Consider disassembling large wardrobes and bed frames before the team arrives
3. Use a Luton Van, Not a Transit
A full 2-bedroom Cardiff terrace rarely fits in a transit van. A Luton van with a tail lift is almost always the right call — it has roughly 3.5x the cargo volume of a small transit, and the tail lift means heavy items don’t have to be manhandled down from the back of the van.
4. Start as Early as Possible
Cardiff’s inner streets get busy from 8am. Getting the van loaded between 7am and 9am means less traffic, easier parking, and cooler temperatures if it’s summer. Most professional Cardiff removal teams will accommodate a 7am start — just ask.
5. Wrap Bannisters and Doorframes
Victorian terrace banisters, skirting boards, and original doorframes are surprisingly easy to chip. Professional removal teams bring blankets and foam padding as standard — but if you’re hiring just a van, protect these areas yourself with old duvets or cardboard.
