Cardiff to Bristol is a popular move. It is close enough to finish in a single day, but there are a few things that make it go much more smoothly.
The journey
The usual route is the M4 over the Prince of Wales Bridge, which takes roughly an hour in normal traffic. Tolls on the Severn crossings were removed in 2018, so there is nothing to pay. Rush hour on the M4 and the M32 into Bristol can add a lot of time, so we plan around it.
Parking in Bristol
Many Bristol neighbourhoods have residents’ parking zones. If your new home is in one, you may need a parking suspension or permission for the van. Check with Bristol City Council or your letting agent a couple of weeks ahead.
Best days to move
- Midweek moves avoid weekend traffic and are easier to book.
- Avoid the last few days of the month if you can, as they are the busiest.
- If you are buying, your move will follow your completion day.
Keeping it to one day
- Be fully packed before the van arrives.
- Label boxes by room so unloading is quick.
- Sort parking at both ends.
- Keep keys and documents with you, not in the van.
