How Long Should a Fridge Freezer Stand After Moving?

After a move, your fridge freezer needs to stand upright for a while before you plug it back in. The common rule of thumb is:

  • Moved upright: wait at least 4 hours.
  • Laid on its side: wait longer, up to 24 hours.

Your manual is the final word, so check it if you still have it (most are online too).

Why you need to wait

The compressor contains oil. When a fridge is tilted or laid down, some of that oil can move into the cooling pipes. Letting it stand gives the oil time to drain back, so the compressor is not damaged when it starts.

Getting your fridge ready the day before

  1. Eat down or give away food over the last few days.
  2. Switch the freezer off 24 hours before moving day to defrost.
  3. Put towels down for the water and empty the drip tray.
  4. Clean and dry it, then leave the door slightly open.
  5. Remove or tape loose shelves and drawers.

On moving day

We move fridge freezers upright wherever possible and secure them in the van. Once it is in place at your new home, leave it to stand, then switch on and give it a few hours to cool before loading food.
